LEARNING ABOUT EACH OTHER AND THE WORLD AROUND US

   Jan 16

Welcome Back??

Hello, I am so excited to be back at school………well kind of back at school. With this crazy weather we have only been back for 5.5 days!! I am very eager to get back into the classroom and continue our learning together. Our first week back was a success. It was so nice getting to know each of my students and learning about their families and interests. When we return we will continue our expedition of Native People, including a traveling museum which will teach us about the Chinook people. In Math we will continue to learn about Area, Perimeter and Measurement and in Reading and Writing we will continue our workshops. Enjoy the snow and I will see you very soon!

Time if FLYING by in 3rd grade!

I am feeling so embarrassed that I have not posted on my blog since September!! We have been learning so many new things in third grade. In Math we just finished our Graphing unit and started Multiplication today. We are starting by learning about “Number of groups” vs “Number IN each group.” We will then start with basic math facts, arrays and move into our timed tests.

In Expedition we finished our Bridge unit and quickly  moved into our Salmon unit. Our trip to Eagle Creek and Bonneville Dam was a success. We learned so many incredible facts about salmon and we actually got to watch them spawn. As we move through our Salmon unit we will smoothly move right into Native Americans. We are learning that salmon played a huge role in the survival of the Native Americans that used to live right here in the Willamette Valley. We just went to the Lelooska Foundation and got to hear amazing Native American legends and we got to tour their museum that was full of very interesting artifacts.

I am so excited to be learning alongside such a great group of students this year. Keep up the great work third grade!!!

Bridges, Bridges, Bridges

Here are some photos from our last few weeks. We have been learning so much about the Portland bridges and what makes each bridge unique. We even had a day of exploration where we built bridges out of Kinex in teams. The kids have really been enjoying our time learning about bridges. I am so impressed with the bridges that were designed for the Bridge Expo. If you didn’t have time and still wanted to build a bridge, bring it in any time!!!

Thank you New Seasons!

Thank you New Seasons for having us at your store yesterday. We had so much fun learning all about the store and the products in the store. We learned that where New Seasons is at now used to be Nyberg Farms. The Nyberg family still shops at New Seasons today. We also learned that the bakery at New Seasons is 100% organic. Debra and Leslie taught us all about the farms where their food comes from and the wonderful relationships they have with these families. We even got to go into the back room and see the refrigerator room, the freezer and the delivery room. We were so lucky to have this opportunity to learn all about the delicious local foods that are grown right here in the Willamette Valley.

What’s New in Third Grade?

We are just moving right along in third grade. I can’t believe it’s already almost March! In Math we have moved through multiplication and division and now we are learning all about Geometry. We have been learning about types of lines, types of angles and how to classify triangles. In Writing we did lesson/moral stories and then we moved onto creating our own inventions. This week we are going to start opinion writing. In Science/Social Studies we have been learning about weather/climate and how those two things effect what grows in Oregon, the US and all over the world. Our next step in this unit is looking at where are local foods come from.

Today we got a special visit from Adam Buchwald. He came into our classroom and was talking with us about Coding. The kids really enjoyed seeing how things work and how much work it takes just to do one simple thing on the computer. Thank you Adam!

Junior Achievement

This morning we had Lane Kadel come to our class and start our Junior Achievement program. JA is a program created to teach children about the city around them. Today we talked about the different zones of a city (residential, business, industrial, multi-purpose, agricultural) We then talked about city planners, goods and services, and what makes a city run smoothly. The students got to create their own mini city and place the different buildings where they thought they belonged. We will continue JA throughout this week and next week. Thank you Lane Kadel for working with us again this year!!!

Salmon Video

We just released the salmon yesterday. It has been so much fun learning about the salmon and watching them grow and move through their salmon life cycle. We will miss them very much! Here is a video documenting the release. Enjoy!
