Hello everyone!

I am soooo impressed with each and every one of the first graders in room 18!  What a wonderful job they did presenting their animal research and habitat study, as well as reading their group book out loud to over 75 people!  The first graders also hosted 8 different classes in our room, sharing their work.  You should be very proud of your child!  This end of year celebration really showed how much reading, writing, art and math the children did this spring.  Please compliment your child on their habitat study if you have not already.

Fondly,

Angie Wise

Pre and Post Habitat Test

Attached to this newsletter, please note the post and pre test on habitats.  The post (or end of unit) test is on the front and the pre on the back.  There is a possibility of 21 points total.  Each number is worth one point and the back is worth 3 points, making 21 total points.  Each and every student gained knowledge in this unit.  Nice job everyone!

Reading Homework

This is the very last week that the children will be checking books out of my library, both for the Home Reading with parents and the brown manila envelope.  Library ended last week for the school.  Please make sure and return all books by Thursday!  Of course, just because we are not sending home books does not mean to stop reading!

Hi Everyone!

I hope your Mother’s Day yesterday was relaxing and enjoyable!  Your kids worked really hard on their Georgia O’Keefe art project to give to you.  They had to observe a real flower, sketch it, then sketch it again magnified, then watercolor it.  We used black sharpie to outline the pencil lines.  This piece of art is worthy of being framed!

I also want to thank you for the wonderful flowers, chocolates, notes and all for teacher appreciation week, last week. It is soooo nice to be appreciated!  I love teaching each and every one of your children!  Thank you so much!

Volunteer Appreciation Week

This week when you come in to volunteer, please get some coffee and treats by the front office. This is our way of saying, “thank you” so much for volunteering at Stafford!  I am so appreciate of my reading helpers, spelling helpers, art literacy helpers, party and field trip helpers.  You guys are wonderful!

Homework

A lot of the kids are saying to me that they are really busy at home in the evenings.  It IS a busy time of year and the days are longer.  Sports and playing in the yard sometimes takes precedence to homework, I know.  If you cannot get the reading done, then just keep one or both books an extra night.  Bookmark where you did read and finish it later!  We are going to keep the same word wall words as last week.  I noticed we really need to work on the “wh” words, such as why, when, and what.  Quiz your kids on their word wall words as you are driving.  Play games with them at home, such as Hangman and Concentration (memory).  They will become better spellers!  Thank you.

Spelling/Word Wall Words

We will have the same word wall words as last week.  Please write down the new word wall words on your child’s “At Home Word Wall”.
Our new word wall words are:

Science and Research

As you all know, you are creating dioramas at home on one habitat.   Today, we discussed what color the background should be. We are writing math problems at school and then will be creating pictures to go with the story problem.  We are painting the background color first…just as you should do in your shoebox (diorama at home.)  Of course, you can use paper, etc. on the background too!

Writing

At school, your child chose one animal to research further.  Each child checked a book out of the library on that animal and has a computer print-out (one from school and one from home) giving them more information about that animal. The children learned how to highlight important information and then to take notes from the highlighted information.  From the notes, the children will write a non-fiction story about their animal.  The story will be published and then the kids will illustrate their animal stories.  It is amazing how much a first grader can do!  You will be amazed May 28 too!

May Homework

Do as much of the May homework as you can this month.  Please change the math numbers around if it seems too easy!

Music “Informance”

Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 3, our class will be performing in music class with Mrs. Kagan.  Mrs. Kagan is inviting you and your family in to see what the first graders have been learning this year.  It will be during our music time at 12:25 to 12:55 in the music room.  Come if you can!
