Dear Parents,

Thank you so much to everyone who came in today to help with our Halloween party! We had a wonderful time parade through the hallways and other first grade classrooms, and a great time decorating pumpkins, playing bingo, wrapping each other up as mummies, listening to scary stories, and eating pumpkin cookies.  Thank you parent party helpers!!

Halloween Math Homework

Tonight, after trick or treating (or tomorrow, but before the kids eat it!), please sort your candy using the “Halloween Candy Sort” sheet attached.  You decide the two categories, or “attributes” on how to sort!  Please send in the homework sheet telling us how your sorted your candy, kids!

Parent helpers

Thank you so much for reading with the kids!  It really helps.  If, for some reason, you cannot come in on your volunteer day, please try and find a substitute.  We really want to send home a “home reading book” everyday if we can!  A Nov. volunteer list is on the back of this newsletter.  Thank you!

A number packet is coming home today.  Please help your child with writing their numbers correctly.  Erase if you need to.  Help the child write from top to bottom.  Thank you.

Special Project!

We will be making a very special Thanksgiving centerpiece. Each child will need a half-gallon milk or juice carton (not plastic). This is for a family keepsake, so wash it thoroughly with soap and maybe even a little bleach. Please write you child’s name on the bottom of the carton. If you have an extra carton we sometimes need extra. Please have the carton in school by Nov. 14th! Also, each child needs to bring in two apples the week of Nov. 14 for the project too.  Extra apples are always appreciated for those that forget.

Dear Parents:

Reading

Your kids are really becoming great readers! Please continue to have them “practice” reading at home. Remember, they probably have read both books at school, so homework should be a practice. If, for some reason, the book is too hard, just keep it an extra day or two for them to practice at home. This is OK to do!!!!! Also, just a reminder, ONLY write the book on the white paper from the brown manila envelope NOT LABELED HOME READING. So, only write the book from the child’s book box. Does this make sense? If not, email me! wisea@wlwv.k12.or.us Chapter Books Some of the kids are beginning to take books that have chapters in them…such as Frog and Toad, Mouse Tails, and Henry and Mudge. When the kids have chapter books, each chapter may be written down on the write paper…so, you can write Frog and Toad, Chapter 1 on one line and Frog and Toad, Chapter 2 on the second line. Basically, treat each chapter as one book.

Oct. 28 Fieldtrip to Crest Farm

The parents going on our fieldtrip are: Chris Stecher and Michaela Pulaski. We still have room for 3 more parents. Let me know if you want to go! Halloween party and parade!

First grade has a bit of a tradition here at Stafford…we let the kids dress up for our party! We actually have a “little” parade through the Kindergarten rooms and the other first grade rooms. So, your kids may bring their costumes to school on Monday, Oct. 31. We will change into the costumes right after recess, do our parade, then our party will begin about 9:45 or so and last until 10:40. Please, if the costumes have weapons (example: policeman, etc.), then please leave the weapons at home. Thank you and we look forward to a fun filled day! BTW, the parent helpers sent out a letter about donating money for the party last week. Please send your $20.00 to Holly Hunsucker. Questions? Call our room parents at 503-828-8499 for Holly and 503-305-6175 for Molly Hemsley.

Hi Parents!

What great conferences we are having!  I have so enjoyed getting to know your kids better and sharing that knowledge with you. Your kids have learned soooo much in just 5 weeks!  Just wait till we meet again in March…it really is amazing how much first graders learn.  They are just like sponges!

Writing

One of the things we talked about at conferences was writing.  In first grade, we focus on “getting our ideas down”.  The students are working on writing what happened at the beginning of the story, in the middle, and at the end.  The children should write one or two sentences for a 3 page story.  Keeping a journal at home and trying to write at least one story a week would be great.  The kids tend to write stories about their own lives, which are called narratives.  Once the story is written (have them sound out the words unless of course it is a word wall word!), they can reread and edit.  Editing is making sure capital letters are at the beginning of the sentence and lowercase letters throughout.  Punctuation should be at the end of the sentences and of course, spaces should be between words.  Encouraging your child to “just write” is a start!

Hi Parents,

Thank you so much to all of the parent helpers last week!  You are invaluable!  I just wanted to remind all of you that the children are reading books that are “Too Easy” on purpose with the home reading parents.  This is to practice fluency and reading with expression.  Teach your child how to say sentences that end in a question mark or exclamation mark.  Have them reread the book so that they ”become” that character.  You can only do this with books that are too easy.  Your child will continue to take home “just right” books from their bookbox.  Again, thank you to all, because you all help at home too!

Reading Workshop

On the back of this newsletter is a reading strategy sheet.  There are so many ways to figure out a word when you come to one you don’t know.  As adults, we tend to skip the word and read to the end of the sentence of paragraph to figure out the context of the word…or what makes sense.  Teach your kids those strategies too!  Sliding your finger under the word, breaking the word down into chunks and rereading are all excellent strategies.  We don’t want the kids to get bogged down with sounding out each letter, but to start looking at “chunks” of letters.  Help them out with all of the strategies!  Keep the strategy sheet nearby so that you can use it when your child reads to you.

Math

We are solving story problems in math. What is a story problem?  It is a problem that the children write out, in story form, and then solve using numbers. We are solving each other’s family story problems that we wrote a few weeks ago.  It is one thing to solve our own and quite a different one to solve someone else’s. The children have to read the problem, figure out how many people are in that child’s family, then read to find out what it is they have to solve.  I am teaching them a variety of ways to count to solve the problems…most kids are counting by one’s, but instead, how about counting eyes by twos?  Fingers by tens?  How about toes, hands, arms and legs?  Do oral family story problems over dinner and while driving.  Help teach your kids to count by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

Scholastic Books

Help!  One of you ordered out of the September book order and forgot to write your child’s name at the top…so, I have an order with no name!  If you think this could be you, could you please contact me?  Thanks so much!
