Hello!

I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving break.  It was a nice break, but it is good to be back…to the smiling faces!  In West Linn /Wilsonville School District, we teach character traits.  One trait we are focusing on right now is “caring”.  There are many ways to show that we care about others.  One small way to show you care is by saying “Good Morning”.  The kids can say good morning to you, their brother or sister, their bus driver, our principal, another parent or teacher, or me.  They are learning that this shows you care (as well as being good manners) and it really makes the other person’s day!  Try it out in your household!

Word Wall Words

We are going to have the same word wall words as the week before Thanksgiving (It was just a way crazy, busy week!).  Please remember to write these words on the portable word wall.  Please have your child look at the word wall when they are writing in their home journals at least two times a week. Every word wall word should be spelled correctly!

Reading

It is so important to teach your kids that there are many ways of reading.  We read not only books, but newspapers, magazines, recipes, ingredients on food packages, directions on how to put things together, where to drive to, how to play a game, emails, dictionaries, etc.  We also read poems.  The kids have really gotten into Maurice Sendak’s poems titled “Chicken Soup with Rice”.  They are silly little poems about the months of the year, that the kids can read and sing…and they love! Perhaps you can introduce a new type of reading to your kids?

Math

We are studying geometry at school!  We are learning about shapes around us and how they are everywhere!  Please talk about shapes in your home.  On the back of this page, find 4 different shapes of actual “things in your home.  Draw and write what the shape and item is.  Find shapes that are unusual such as rhombus, trapezoid and hexagons, if you can.  Thank you to everyone who helped cut out paper shapes for us to use at school!

Word study

We now have 3 word wall words that sound the same, but mean different things and have a different spelling.  This is called a homonym. The homonyms are to, two, and too.  Please discuss with your child the different word meanings, spellings, and when to use them.  Make sure they know how to spell them too!

Tree Study

The kids are bringing home their homemade paper today.  Please ask them how they made it!!

As part of the tree study, we learning about what a tree needs to live (sun, soil, air, water), who lives in trees, the life cycle of trees, what is made from trees, and we are observing trees in our schoolyard.  We went on a “tree walk” last Thursday and really “observed’ a tree.  What does the bark look like, feel like, small like…what about the leaves, what shape are they?  Is the tree a conifer or a broadleaf?  Is the tree tall or short?  What colors are the leaves?  Etc.  I encourage you to go on your on tree walk around your house or neighborhood and discuss these things that we’ve done at school.  You could also talk about it while driving!

Special Project!

Please send in your two apples if you have not done so already!  If you have a couple of extras, that would be great also!  Thank you!  The special project will come home at the end of the week for our Thanksgiving table!

Writing Workshop and Published Books

The children are doing an amazing job of writing stories!  They are beginning to understand that stories have a beginning, middle and ending.  They are learning to revise and reread their story and add on details and adjectives.  They are learning to edit and make sure they have capitals, punctuation, and lowercase letters in the correct spots.  We then conference and publish the best stories (not all of them).  The children then illustrate their stories and I bind them when they are finished.  The children then bring home their books for one night to practice reading with you so that they can read and practice public speaking in front of their peers.  So, when a published books comes home, please have your child practice reading with expression and fluency.  Send the book back in the next day where we will keep it safe until the end of the year.  The other students want to read your child’s story!

Fine Motor Skills and Homework

Drawing, writing, painting and tying shoes all help with your child’s fine motor skills and dexterity.  The kids are doing a nice job with proper pencil grip, but I do need your help with tying shoes!  This is a fine motor skill as well.  Please make tying shoes part of your daily homework routine until your child can do it on his/her own.  Thank you!

Tree Study

As part of our tree study, we are lucky to have a guest speaker for two days:  Barb Anderson from Talk about Trees.  She will teach us about trees on Wed. and on Thurs. she will make paper with the kids!  I do need some parent volunteers to help with the papermaking project, as the class is divided in half.  If you would like to help, please come on Thursday,  Nov. 10 from 9:15 to 10:15.  Thank you!

At Home Reading and Volunteers

I just want to remind parents that the “at home reading folder” only comes home when we have parent helpers at school.  There have been a lot of cancellations due to illnesses, which happens, but then the kids do not get to take a second book home.  (They will always take a book from my classroom) Parents, please try and find a substitute if you know you are going to be out.  Thank you!  It’s for the kids!

Special Project!

We will be making a very special Thanksgiving centerpiece. Each child will need a half-gallon milk or juice carton (not plastic). This is for a family keepsake, so wash it thoroughly with soap and maybe even a little bleach. Please write you child’s name on the bottom of the carton. If you have an extra carton we sometimes need extra. Please have the carton in school by Nov. 14th! Also, each child needs to bring in two apples the week of Nov. 14 for the project too.  Extra apples are always appreciated for those that forget.
