Habitat Museum is this Friday!

Please plan on coming to our habitat museum this Friday!  We will host an open house from 10-10:40 in the classroom.  Please come prepared to ask questions about the research the children have done as well about the habitat they chose to study further.  If you choose to bring your little one, please remember that it is your first grader’s time to “shine”.  Please keep your little one under control and they will help their older brother and sister be in the “spotlight”.  You are invited to stay for lunch and recess this Friday!  If you choose to stay for recess and lunch, I do need to know.  Please fill out the form on the back and send back in by Thursday, May 31.  Thank you.

Lunch with your child!

Please fill out the form on the back and send in your money by Thursday, May 31 if  you plan on eating here at Friday, June 1!

Habitat Dioramas

Please send in your dioramas next Tuesday, May 29th.  Please don’t send them in prior as we have no space until next week.  Thank you!

Science

Our habitat unit is coming along so nicely!  I am so impressed with all of the work the students have been doing.  The children have done tons of research and inquiry about one particular animal from their habitat of choice, sketched and water colored their animal, painted their animal with tempera and are now adding 3-D materials, and wrote a non-fiction book about their animal.  They are now illustrating their book.  You will see all of this, along with the diorama they did at home next Friday, June 1st.  You will be amazed at their work!

Spelling/Word Wall Words

We are DONE with the first grade spelling list!  Yeah!  We are keeping “question” a second week and added 4 other ones that I notice the kids spell quite frequently.  Word wall concentration is coming home today.  Please play this with them several times.  I’ve included the “rules” in the children’s ziplocks.

Field trip to CREST

Wed. June 6 is our fieldtrip to CREST.  It is a culmination of our habitat unit, as we get to actually “pull” plants and animals out of a “pond”area and observe it. We will also get to see the CREST garden and sample vegetables.  There is a letter on the back of this newsletter if you wish to go with us.  If you need a summer camp idea, then please go onto the CREST website and look up what they have to offer.  They have great science and environmental camps!

Home Reading Helpers

Please remember to send in the spelling “practice” sheets that Holly Hunsucker has so wonderfully been sending home with each student.  Several students have finished their spelling with her in class.  A big congratulations to Katie, Sydney, Hudson, Will, Jake, Riley, Jackson, Ariana, and Cole for spelling their words with the parent helpers correctly!   The next step is to spell those words in their writing correctly.  Whenever your child comes across a word wall word in their writing, make sure it is spelled correctly.  They can do it!

Science Animal Research Homework

Your child is bringing home a book to help with their animal research tonight.  Some of you have your book at home already.  To help with the research process (so they will better understand how to do this as they grow older), please read the book together and look for animal facts.  Please write the facts on sticky notes and stick it right in the book where you read it.  Some facts you and your child are looking for are:

Prey

Predator

How does your animal survive?

Adaptations

Animal type (mammal, reptile, etc.)

Color

Size

How do they move?

Life cycle

Please send the book back when you are done.  This is due Wed., May 9.

The book your child has may only have 1 or 2 facts, but that is ok.  It is the process they are learning!  Thank you for your help with our animal research.

Please write your word wall words 3 times each and send in!  You may use the back of this newsletter.

Habitat Diorama

By now, everyone should have their shoebox background covered with the appropriate colors.  You should have begun forming animals to go into that habitat out of clay and/or playdough.  Or you could draw/color it on paper and make it stand up 3-d style.  The plants would be the next step.  If you are using real plants, wait until it is due to put those in.  Remember, this is due Tuesday, May 29.

Summer Camps

There are lots of summer camps listed on our District and CREST website.  If your child loves art, sign up for the art institute!  If they love music or drama, sign up for those.  We have learned so much about taking care of our world, then perhaps the EnviroCamp or the Crest Garden camp is what your child is interested in.  No matter what you sign up for, it will be amazing!
