Enrichment Homework

Please save the enrichment part of the homework packet if you do not have time to do it.  Perhaps you can do it at another time. It is ALREADY copied and I hate wasting paper!  Also, if your child finishes homework early in the week, they can do the enrichment!  Do not turn the homework in before Friday unless you have the enrichment done too!

Parent Volunteer Needed!

We need a volunteer to be trained and to teach our class a nutrition unit!  You would be learning with the other volunteers in the other second grade classrooms for 5-6 45 minute lessons, then teach what you learned to our class.  It can be done (and is more fun) when there is more then one volunteer.  I will work around your schedule for when you teach the lessons.

Valentine’s Day Breakfast!

It’s our second grade tradition! Our Valentine’s Day Breakfast is Thursday, February 14th, from 7:50-8:50 am. We want to invite our dads to help us celebrate this special day. Of course grandfathers, uncles or moms can fill in if dads aren’t available. Our parents will be serving breakfast and a wonderful party crew will be taking care of the food details. Our breakfast will include waffles with your choice of syrup or strawberries and whipped cream, milk and/or juice. Along with a few other activities, we’ll play a Valentine bingo game and have one of our dads read us a story after the breakfast. Hopefully, you can save the date!

Upcoming Dates:

Feb. 4:  First Great People Homework due, which is copied separately inside the homework packet stapled to this newsletter.

Feb. 6:  Early Release day at 12:10

Feb. 14:  Valentine’s Day.  Fathers need to save this date as they cook pancakes for all!

Great Person Unit

I will let your child know which great person they will research this week.  It should be one of the 3 choices they wrote down on their homework sheet last week.  This will be a great learning unit!

Math

Please check out the website on my blog titled “Investigations in Math”.  Click on the 2/3 grade level on the right, then “Place Value” on the left.  It is a great site for learning to add by tens and ones!

Word Work (spelling, writing and reading)

Please remember to write down your words on your “At Home Word Wall” and play games with them!  Use them in your writing!!

Please play a game from “Spelling City” from my blog: http://blogs.stafps.wlwv.k12.or.us/staff/WiseA/

We do this every Monday as a class in computer lab after we practice our Chinese.  Your kids know how to do it!  Ask them to show you!

Blog/Research/Writing/Math

Please check out the new links I’ve added to our classroom blog!  I’ve added DanceMat, which is a “learning to type” link, several research sites, and check out the Math Investigations site.  Click on grades 2/3 and then click on the place value.  Counting and adding  by tens and ones is EXACTLY what we are doing!  Please try out this new site!

Great People Unit

Second graders are beginning a new unit called Great People Making a Difference in the World.  We will be learning about extraordinary contributors, leaders and heroes.  We are asking second graders to select a great person in history or making a difference in the world today.  The first step in this project is to choose a person to study.  On this sheet, please list your first three choices.  This is due this Friday, Jan. 18

Homework

Homework is now being stapled into a packet.  Please keep the packet all stapled together and have your child write their name on each new page.  There are 2 pages of word work (with new word wall words) in this weeks’ homework.  I want each child to do a great job when they are given their “assessment” on their spelling words on Friday!  Math is a bit different as it is multi-step.  We have practiced in class, but I noticed the kids need more practice when it comes to more than one step…kind of like a word problem!  Of course, there is enrichment at the back if you want to do that!  All homework in front of the enrichment is due on Friday.  Questions?  Call or email!  Also, have the kids just try their best.  Have them work on their own at first and then you help if they need it.  As long as they try, that is most important.

Enrichment Homework is just that…enrichment.  If you choose to do it, that is up to you!  You MAY want to hang on to it and put it in your child’s folder to do at another time just for practice!

Math

Place Value…what is it?  It is where you add ones first, then tens, then hundreds.  I have NOT taught carrying and borrowing, but how to draw out ones, tens and hundreds.  This is what your kids should be doing when solving double and triple digit problems!  If they can not do this, they do not understand the meaning behind the numbers!  Please remind them to draw out the ones, tens and hundreds if they are telling you they can not solve it!  Thank you!

*I am starting something new…the children are getting a “pre-test” on Mondays on the word wall words and a “post test” on Fridays.  I want the kids to see how much they have learned from all of their practicing throughout the week!

Hello everyone!

I hope all of you had a great Winter Break!  It was nice to relax, watch some movies, read books and catch up with friends.  I did go downhill skiing several times as well as cross country skiing.  I went to the coast for several days over the holiday and just love our great Pacific ocean!  It is so peaceful in a gigantic sort of way.  We talked in class about what you did over the break as well!

Reading

We checked out new books for our book boxes today and I can’t say enough how proud I am of all of the children!  They are reading so well!  Research shows that children who read books that are a bit easier will understand them better as well as WANT to read.  If you find your child is reading a book that is too hard, or even that seems just right,(meaning they can read the words, but that they can’t comprehend), they will get frustrated and not want to read.  Please know that by them choosing the books they want to read, at a level that is closer to what they should be reading, they WILL become readers.  They WILL NOT become readers if they are pushed too hard with books they do not want to read or that they do not understand.  Questions?  Please call or email!

Homework

Remember, homework is an opportunity to develop responsibility and strong study habits.  It should be something the children do independently as they are practicing what we learned at school.  Yes, they CAN do it!  They may need direction and guidance, but they Can do it!  When doing math, please write an equation as well as words.  Using tens and ones to solve the problems is the “comprehension” we are striving for in math.

In the new year, I am going to attach an ENRICHMENT packet at the back.  This is an opportunity for all students who desire to go beyond the required work to do so if they wish.  It is not required.
