Dear parents,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your wonderful sympathy cards for me and my mom. It has meant a lot to me. Mother’s day was quite difficult, but yet serene as I remembered all the wonderful things about my mom.  I also want to thank each and every one of you for all the wonderful things you sent for Teacher Appreciation week last week.  Thank you for the coffee, starbucks cards, flowers, candy, fruit, plants and notes.  I feel so appreciated!  Thank you.

Angie Wise

Artist in Residence

What a great week with Okaidja Afroso!  We danced, drummed and sang wonderful African songs with him.  He was an inspiration to us from Africa.  He taught us many things about Africa and was just amazed that WE are helping children in Africa by raising money for their school…just from our reading.  If you have any donations to Africa Bridge, please send it in this week.  You should be so proud of yourselves, children!  Children helping children…amazing!

Rocks, Rocks, Rocks

Grandma Cathy (from Mrs. Wilhelm’s room) taught us about rocks and how to identify the three main types last week:  igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary.  She taught us that minerals are in rocks and we did many activities with her…we were rock hounds!  She gave a flyer about the Rice Museum in Hillsboro and suggested a family trip there sometime.  This Saturday, there is a meteorite and family fun day from 10-5 at the Rice museum.  Google it!

Ecosystems and Volunteering

Please come on in and volunteer as we have lots of projects with our ecosystem unit!  Instead of researching at home, we are having the kids research at school and this is quite a lot of work!  Please come in whenever you can.  I am not going to send home a new volunteer schedule, but just know…I can use you!  Thank you in advance!!!!!

Hi everyone,

I just want to say thank you for all of your thoughts and messages about my mom.  It’s been a really tough week, helping my dad transition and put my mother to rest.  I have been a little teary today with the staff and a bit with the kids.  I’ve told them it is ok for people to cry when someone they love dies.  Please talk with them about this.  Thank you for understanding.  Your kids make me smile everyday.  I am so lucky to have them in my class.

Sincerely,

Angie

Okaidja Afroso

Our second graders will have the pleasure of working with Okaidja Afroso, a native of Ghana, the week of May 6-10.  He will be presenting his Dancing Feet and Talking Drums residency to our second grade classes in support of our Ecosystem Unit and African study.   Second grade students will be performing their African drumming and dancing for our Africa Bridge Celebration on Friday, May 10th from 8:15 – 9:15 in the MPR.  We would love for you to attend this wonderful assembly.

Ecosystem Homework

Homework this week is to finish your mobile…a hanging ecosystem of your child’s animal and the things in that environment that it needs to live.  Cutting things out of paper is just fine.  Using a coat hanger and thread will work.  Try your best to make it balance, as we are learning about balance and motion doing this project.  It is due Monday, May 13th, but you may turn it in anytime this week.  Please turn in the paperwork sent home last week about making a plan for you mobile.

A second homework on ecosystems is being sent home as well.  Please write clues on the paper provided, draw a picture and color it of your animal and then try it out on family members.  Please do a really neat job on the sketch and coloring as it will be sitting up on our desks at school.

Thank you.
