Great People Tradition

Great People Tradition

Welcome to another second grade tradition. Our fantastic second graders have chosen a Great Person to study and research. Last Friday, the Owls brought home their Great Person family research instructions in a green folder.

We are asking each parent to read over these instructions with your child so that the direction of this unit is understood. There is a suggested schedule to follow to complete the research in an organized, relaxed and timely manner. Following the suggested weekly schedule will also reinforce study skills needed for homework responsibility.

We will continue to reinforce this unit with our classroom study of people who have made a difference in the world. Discussing the character traits of people who overcame handicaps and never gave up on their dreams is a conversation we will continue. We also look at courage, perseverance, bravery, resilience, love, compassion and curiosity in the lives of so many great people and how each one of us can choose to make a difference in and for the world! Have fun researching your family’s great person. It will be exciting to learn from every classmate about the qualities, skills, passions and talents of their great person. We are ready to be inspired!

Field trip January 15

Wednesday, January 15th

The Owls will be heading to the West Linn High School to see a play performed by the Children’s Theatre class. This play is an original production of The Devoted Friend and will be performed in the WLHS Black Box Studio Theatre. We will leave the school at 8:20 and will return by 10:15.

The Wise Owls Newsletter

Great People

Your child’s great person to research was attached to the actual newsletter sent home yesterday.  I suggest reading books and on-line articles about your great person.  In this week’s homework, you will need to fill out a timeline listing 5 things that are important to your great person.  Your child will also be filling out a character map where they write out why their person was great, how they feel about the person and tell/draw what they looked like.  Look in the homework packet for detailed instructions!

Please keep all of the papers stapled and return to me on Friday with the Homework Menu.  Thank you!

Homework

Again this week, math homework is attached as well as Great People papers that need to be turned in on Friday with the signed Homework Menu.  The Online Exploration Homework is for those students that finish all of their other homework.

Scholastic News Book Orders

As you know, scholastic books are a great way to get your child reading what they like, at their level.  Last week I sent home both 2nd grade and 3rd grade Scholastic news book orders.  Today, I am sending another one about biographies on great people that are celebrated during the month of January and February.  If you would like to order a book, please fill out the form on the back of the Scholastic news, add up the total and write a check to Scholastic and send to school.  The book orders are due this Friday, January 17.

Upcoming Dates:

Jan. 15:  Fieldtrip to WLHS  to see play from high schoolers. 8:15-10:15.

Jan. 15:  Early Release day at 12:10

Jan. 17:  Scholastic Book Orders due

Wise Owls Newsletter Jan. 6, 2014

The Wise Owls Newsletter

January 6, 2014

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I can’t believe it is 2014. I hope you have enjoyed the past few weeks with your friends and families. I know I have!

Volunteers

I am so grateful for all of the help we have received this year.  As we get back into the swing of things, please check the schedule on the back of the hard copy of the newsletter.

Great People

As many of you know we will be beginning Great People this month. The official project packets will be sent home on Friday January 17th.  This week in class I will be introducing a number of Great People, through books, video clips, and short movies. Part of the homework this week will be to begin talking about Great People at home and doing preliminary research. The homework menu this week will have four tasks related to Great People. Please take your time on these. The biggest part of this will be narrowing down who your child wants to focus on for the next few months. I am asking that each child submit their top three choices by Friday, January 10 and then I will assign them a person accordingly (this way we learn about a variety of Great People).

Homework

As we begin the second part of our second grade year, I will expect second graders to be accountable for their Word Practice, Math, and Great People homework. The main focus will be the Great People research project. I will continue to send home a homework menu with other activities for students. Please make sure you are signing off on completed tasks. I am sending some math homework that is attached to the homework menu.  Please keep it attached and return it with your menu on Friday.  The Online Exploration Homework is for those students that finish all of their other homework.

Looking forward to a great 2014!

Ms. Wise
