The Wise Owls Newsletter

March 31, 2014

Hi everyone!

I hope your spring break was fantastic!  I know I had a great time diving, hiking, snorkeling and hanging on the beaches of St. Lucia in the Caribbean!  It is fantastic down in the West Indies!  THAT is where my Flat Stanley went.  Where did your Flat Stanley go?  What did he do?  Whatever you and your family did, that is what Flat Stanley did.  We shared today about what Flat Stanley did with your child.  This will be going up on a bulletin board in the hall, so please send in your Flat Stanley and the spring break journal by tomorrow if you have not already turned it in.  As you receive your Flat Stanley’s that were mailed out, please send them in. They will be shared, then go up on our hall bulletin board.

Ecosystem Unit

We are learning about 6 main ecosystems in the world:  oceans, mountains, deserts, savannas, polar (north), and the rain forest.  Before spring break your child learned about all of them before they chose one to research further.  In today’s homework, under ecosystem research, the one they chose is listed.  Please help them research animals from that ecosystem on my blog under “research “and choose 3 animals to research further this spring.  This paper is on the back of the homework menu and is due by Monday, April 7th

IXL Math on the Computer

I did put down certain numbers on the homework menu, but as we talked at conferences, only do the ones that your child has not done.  I gave each of you a print out of what they have done, so please do the ones not attempted or the ones in red on the IXL conference paper.  Thank you for keeping that paper in a safe place for your child!

Upcoming Dates:

March 31:  Flat Stanley journal and pictures from YOUR spring break was due.  Please send it in if you are finished!

April 30:  Early Release at 12:10.

May 21:  Early Release at 12:10.

Ecosystems

We’re beginning our research about ecosystems.  The activities in this unit will provide students with practice in the skills of questioning, problem solving, reading, research and recording the information that we gather. Your modeling of home research with Great People will serve as the core for our study of Ecosystems. We will research the ocean, mountains, desert, rainforest, polar region and the savanna.

To support our research in class, homework this week will focus on the ocean ecosystem. Check out our links under the Ecosystems Heading on our classroom blog. We are also planning a field trip to the Rice Rock Museum in April to support the geology section of each of these ecosystems!

Conferences

Thank you to everyone for valuing your child and the work they do in second grade.  The children were very proud to show you what they are learning and what they are working on.  It is important to have goals in our life and with your child, we made some goals for the rest of the year.  The goal sheets will be coming home with your child today.  Please read and go over the goals with your son/daughter so that they can succeed and meet their goals for the rest of this year.  Thank you for helping your child in their learning in second grade!

 Ecosystems

We are beginning our Ecosystem unit!  We began by talking and learning about a very special feature that is in ecosystems:  Water.  Talk to your child about water in the mountains/forest, the savanna, the Polar region, the desert, ocean and the rain forest.  Have a discussion about the states of matter…can it be frozen, or steam, or gas?  Have a discussion about how people can affect the water.  This one very important feature is needed by every living animal on earth.  How can we help take care of it?  Discuss!

Great People Hall of Fame Invitation

You are Invited to the Hall of Fame

The great people presentations have been such a fantastic display of family research, enthusiasm for learning and creative speech writing.  Second graders have had the opportunity to learn about so many special people who have inspired us to make a difference in the world. When the curtain closes on the classroom presentations, the final applause and finale will be the Great People Hall of Fame!

We invite you to celebrate with us the showcase of all of our Great People across the grade level. We will assemble from 8:15-9:15 in the MPR on Tuesday, March 11th. Second graders will wear their special outfits to school and will change into school attire after the Hall of Fame.

This is an Open House format so stop by anytime during this hour in the MPR.  The students from K-5 have also been invited! We look forward to this celebration with you!
