Wise Owls’ Newsletter Dec. 11, 2017

Hello all!
What a fantastic Culture Fair we had on Friday! Your children were fantastic with reading and memorizing their stories about their family, name and tradition! It was so much fun to learn about each child as they presented to you and to others. Thank you so much for your participation! It was and IS a great beginning to the holidays!
I also wanted to remind you of our Winter party, Thursday, Dec. 14 from 8-9:15. Be on the lookout for an email from Diane Anderson (Belle’s mom) to coordinate!
On Friday, Dec. 15, our class has earned a class prize by filling the jewels in our glass jar for working so well as a classroom community. You may send in a DVD and we will vote on one to share as our “Prize”. This is our second class reward this year! Yay! Your child may also wear their pajamas, bring extra snacks and a small pillow or stuffed animal for cuddling up and watching our movie on Friday.

Here’s what we are up to this week:
Word Work: We will not have spelling words this week. Enjoy your family time together!
Social Studies: We will continue to celebrate our very own stories and family experiences with the other second grade classes this week. Our culture means so much to us!

Writing: As we write cards to our friends and families, we are continually working on editing and making sure all word wall words are spelled correctly, we have capitals at the beginning of our sentences and punctuation at the end. I encourage you to have your child write individual holiday and thank you cards this Winter break and have them edit, revise and get better at knowing their word wall words by memory.
Math: We are working on Geometry. I sent home a letter last week and will again today describing this unit of study. 2nd graders will learn how to identify attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes, learn about rectangular arrays, and how to divide 2-D shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. We will learn how to build and draw 2-D shapes, compose and decompose shapes in different ways, and use geometric language to describe and identify important features of 2-D shapes. The IXL strands that goes with this unit of study are the letters “T, U, V and W”. I encourage you to work on these over the Winter break along with adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.
Reading: Please read every day over the break! What a fun relaxing thing to do after so much excitement!
Thank you and enjoy these next few weeks of family time! Happy Holidays!
