What a great week we had last week!  Our students have whole-heartedly jumped into our work with the book, Because of Winn Dixie.  We have read through the first several chapters and are learning about how to “write inside the story”.  Our class is learning to give opinions based on what they have read and find evidence to support their ideas from within the story.  They are also learning to write insightful and detailed journal responses.  It is exciting to see the progression in their writing from the beginning of the school year.

We are well into our study of geometry in math.  Last week we looked specifically at area, perimeter and the characteristics of certain shapes like triangles and quadrilaterals.  Our students are learning to calculate the area within a given shape by using square units.  They have also worked on figuring out the perimeter of shapes- both quadrilaterals and unusual shapes.  There are many new math websites links up on the blog, so please encourage your child to check them out to help reinforce the work we are doing in class.

We have wrapped up our Oregon Geography unit and will move on to studying animals next.  Throughout this unit we will learn about animal kingdoms and habitats and will research and write reports on a specific animals.  It is also an opportunity to teach expository writing, learn to write a bibliography and assemble research notes into a written report.  This is always a favorite unit of study for third graders.

    Important Upcoming Dates:

    - February 14th: Tanner Springs Field Trip/Valentine’s Day Party (Please turn in your child’s field trip permission form if you haven’t sent it back to school already).

    - Thursday, February 23rd: Spring Music Program in the MPR.  Your child should be at school at 6:40 p.m. and they should wear black for the performance.

-Spring Conferences are right around the corner.  We will do online sign-ups like we did in the fall.  Sign-ups begin on Tuesday, February 14th.  We look forward to meeting with you soon!

    Have a great week!

This month, we are studying Oregon Geography. We are learning about the different regions, climate, landforms and important facts that make Oregon a great state. Did you know that Milk is our state drink? Ask your child to navigate the site http://kids.traveloregon.com for you. We did a scavenger hunt last week on that site and there is so much more to explore! We will find the link on the side of our blog under Oregon Geography. Monday, January 23, we are making salt maps of the state of Oregon. This will be a fun, but messy project! You will see the final project coming home later in the month.

Spelling scores this past week were up again. We have been spending time in class studying and practicing the word patterns as well as asking kids to take their spelling study at home more seriously. Spelling City is a great site to use for practice at home. We update the list of words weekly so a current list is available each Monday.  Helping your child be on the hunt for their spelling words in the books they read each week is another great idea for spelling practice.

In math, we just completed our unit on Multiplication and Division. At this point, the kids have learned about the difference between multiplication and division and their inverse relationship. They’ve learned vocabulary including: product, quotient, divisors, factors, multiples, and dividend. Our students worked in partners to create and solve multiplication and division story problems. They also practiced solving story problems by first figuring out if they needed to multiply or divide.  Solving these story problems is still difficult for some as it takes time to learn how to identify the best way to solve each one. We will continue to work on this concept and review it again later in the year. We will continue testing basic multiplication facts regularly and expect that kids are studying multiplication facts at home throughout the year.

We take timed multiplication tests at least 3 days during the week. Each child is working at his or her own pace and has six minutes to demonstrate accuracy of the facts at each level (1′s, 2′s, 3′s, 4′s, 0-4 review and so on). When a child scores 97% or better on one level, he/she moves on to the next level. We have been sending home practice tests and flashcards with kids who have not passed a level after three attempts. They are welcome to take home these materials at any time, though. We send home the timed tests after they are graded and recorded in class. Consistent practice at home is an important part of a student’s success with mastering the multiplication facts.

Our next math unit is Geometry-measuring perimeter and area. Just a reminder that we have a link to Math Investigations on our blog. This is the math curriculum we use here at Stafford.

As writers, we started the new year learning and enjoying comic strips and graphic novels. These are two very popular genres for kids to read. It is a great way to get back into the writing process after a long vacation. The kids loved the project and were very engaged in looking at the text elements that make this genre effective. They created final written comic strips (many without the humor, but much creativity), based on what they had learned in the first week of studying this genre. These will be on display in the classroom for a couple of weeks and then we will send them home. This week brings a review of writing modes and the steps in the writing process. We will begin our animal study and research projects in about two weeks. More to come on that soon.

Last December, we finished our first whole-class literature study. We read James and the Giant Peach. We learned a lot about character development and author’s theme during the reading. We completed several journal responses and made some comparisons with other text we were reading. The kids LOVED this book and the discussions that followed our reading each day were deep and thoughtful. This week, we are starting a new book. As a class, we will be reading Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Some kids have read this or even have seen the movie. That familiarity will not interrupt our class study as we will be studying more character development along with developing thematic thesis statements so that students could later write essays about their thematic ideas. A big part of this study will be learning how to use specific information from the text to support our ideas and opinions. You can help your child understand this concept further by asking them to go back in text you are reading at home to support ideas they have. Ask them to “Show me where you read something that makes you think that”.

Conferences are coming up at the end of February and early March. We will keep you updated on dates/times of conferences as it gets closer. As a school, we post days/times on the same day to make it fair on families to sign up. We will be doing online sign ups again.

It has been a busy couple of weeks in our classroom!  Students have been working hard on wrapping up their study of bones and muscles.  They should now be able to identify the major bones in their body and be able to talk about the jobs bones do for our body (to give us shape and structure and to protect our internal organs).  You will see their final bone test come home with report cards in December.

Last week we had a visit last week from Thomas Doty, a Native American storyteller.  He talked with our students about the skills it takes to be a strong storyteller and shared several Native American legends.  This event kicked off our study of storytelling and Native Americans.  We are excited for our visit this Friday to Chief Lelooska to learn more about these subjects.  We are starting to use our Author’s Chair time, when students present their writing to the class, as a way to practice good storytelling with the use of a “spotlight” and microphone.  They are really enjoying this experience.  (To learn more about Thomas Doty, please check out his website: www.dotycoyote.com.)

This week we started reading James and the Giant Peach as class.  Our class was thrilled to dive into such a fun book!  We will be deepening our understanding of comprehension strategies as we read through this story.  In particular, we are using the strategy, “Tune Into Interesting Words”, to make connections with what we read.  We are tying this concept into the work your child does during Writer’s Workshop too.  Reading strong, interesting words in context is one of the best ways to learn how to include them in the stories your child writes.  We encourage you to help your child tune into interesting words as they read and write at home.

In math, we have been working on collecting and representing data.  Your child has learned how to make bar graphs, double bar graphs and line plots.  They have also practiced finding mode, median, range and outliers.  We have started some work around measurement, in particular looking at measurement tools (ruler, yard stick, measuring tape) and units of measure (inch, foot, yard, centimeter, meter).  Measuring things around the house is a great way to practice using these skills.  It has been fun to watch them dive into this work and make great connections with their learning partners as well.

Please remember that our spelling test will be on Thursday this week because of our Chief Lelooska field trip on Friday.  Your child will need to bring a sack lunch for Friday’s trip.  The building we will meet in will not be heated so please make sure they wear several warm layers.

Have a great week and Thanksgiving Holiday!

We hope you are enjoying the beautiful fall weather. It was wonderful meeting with all of you during conferences. Thank you for taking the time to meet with us. It is always an important piece as we start the new school year.

All third graders are currently studying Bones and Muscles. We are in the midst of our science labs for this unit. We’re sure the kids had many stories to tell after Friday’s lab. We have been meeting with Savina Darzes our Scientist in Residence. We will also start science centers in our classroom as kids begin to memorize the names of the important bones in the body. We have many hands on activities planned including the use of some technology to help kids learn, retain and apply all they are learning. During the unit, we will have a couple of quizzes on the bone location and names. We are also doing some writing in our response journals to track our learning and questions. Third graders always love this unit and learn many new facts to share with you. It’s especially fun to do during this time of year when Halloween is on their minds!

Speaking of Halloween, we will be having a class party on Monday, October 31. We are asking that the kids come to school in costumes that morning because we are taking a field trip to Tanner Springs. We will be singing Halloween carols to our friends at Tanner Springs. Upon our return, our class party will start at 9:00. At 9:45, the kids will change out of costumes and get ready for their morning recess. Costume reminders at Stafford include: costumes are worn only during class parties, only costumes that are not scary in nature, no toy weapons of any kind, make-up only during class parties as well.

In math, we are studying data collection and interpretation. This week, we are learning about line plots, mode, median, outliers and range. We are learning how to order values from smallest to largest in order to interpret data easily. Our next steps are to ask questions of one another to create our own line plots for interpretation. Please continue to study addition and subtraction facts at home as we continue some fact practice at school.

Our young writers are practicing their editing skills each day. They are learning how to be positive and supportive critics of their peers when conferencing with one another. Mrs. Gilkey and Ms. Hilal have had a chance to meet with each student over the past week to check in on writing topics and offer support where needed. We have several students publishing their first stories (some are even typing their stories) in great anticipation for reading in the author’s chair.

As readers, we continue to learn new strategies that help us comprehend on a deeper level. One way you can help with this at home is to have your child stop during reading time and share the who and the what of the story. Ask your child to think how the character is feeling. Discuss the setting. Where and when is the story taking place? What is the author’s message in the story? We continue to work on book choice in the classroom. We had a class discussion on what it takes to be committed to our improvement in reading this year. We challenge each and every student to find the love for reading more than ever before during their third grade year.

We will have our first Art Literacy project next Tuesday, November 1. We have a guest speaker joining us tomorrow, Wednesday, October 26. Ted Ruback is an expert on the skeleton and bones in our body. He will come and share his expertise in a hands on way with all of third grade. You will see that your child brought home a copy of the skeleton and its labeled bone names. This is to be used as a study guide. We will take some practice quizzes during the next two weeks. You will also see an extra credit homework assignment that your child brought home. This is an optional assignment.

Don’t forget to check out spellingcity.com linked through our classroom blog. Each week, we will enter the current spelling list so that the kids can easily practice their words for the week. It’s a great resource to use.

Have a great week, everyone. Please contact us with any questions, concerns or celebrations!

We are easing into our daily routines now and getting to the core of our work. We continue to build a community atmosphere in which we all feel comfortable working with one another. We are making new friends and learning to nurture long time friendships along the way. It has been an enjoyable first month of third grade.

As readers, we are learning about the following reading strategies: choose and read appropriate level texts that are a good fit, check for understanding after paragraphs or pages in our texts, back up and reread when we need to clarify or prove our thinking and Making a picture or mental image in our minds as we read. We have done “sketch to stretch” where we draw images we “see” in our minds as we have our read aloud time. We are working hard at our comprehension skills and will continue to build fluency each day. The kids will receive and have time to read a Time For Kids magazine in class each week. These are sent home at the end of the week so you can check in on current events we’ve discussed in class. It’s a great way for our third graders to make connections within the world around them.

As writers, we are learning the steps of the writing process. We found using pre-writing maps can be helpful as we begin new stories. We are learning how to develop ideas and include important details in those stories during the drafting stage. We have learned the parts of a paragraph as we wrote summaries about the Portland Bridges and descriptive paragraphs of “My Quiet Place Is…”

In math, we have completed our first unit on place value, addition and subtraction. The kids took a math assessment and have been taking some timed tests over basic addition and subtraction facts. We are starting a new unit on Data Analysis. We are learning how to start with a question, gather information and report the information to others. In our next homework folder, you will see an explanation and ideas for home on this new math unit.

Due to the shorter school week next week, we will not be sending home regular homework. Please have your child read nightly and practice addition/subtraction facts. It is so important to keep up with that to help the kids build greater fluency in reading and math.

If you have not yet returned the student profile given out at Curriculum Night, please send it in ASAP. We use those in preparation for our conferences. Thank you to those who have returned them already. You are the expert on your child. Thank you for your insight.

We look forward to seeing you at conferences!
