Field Trips for 2015-2016

Dear First Grade Parents,

FYI – A permission slip went home today about our four field trips for first grade this year.  The slip gives information about each trip as far as cost and the dates.  More details on each trip will come home closer to the time we go.  We will be asking for parent volunteers at that time also.  Parents will be chosen lottery style if we have more parents than needed.  The field trips should be educational and a lot of fun.  Please return your child’s slip and money as soon as possible.

Important First Grade News & Notes

images-1Dear First Grade Parents,

I want to thank you all for your thoughtful gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week.  It was such a wonderful week.  I loved the pictures, flowers, goodies, cards, etc!!!  I love your kids!  They are so amazing.  They bring so much joy to my life and job.  Thanks for sharing them with me.

Our Africa Bridge reading went very well.  I want to thank our kids for their diligence and for the time they spent reading.  Our classroom raised an amazing $420.00 for the kids in Africa. The total raised with our wonderful second graders was $4,200!  Dr. Roger  surprised us by letting us know that there is a foundation in our community that was inspired by the efforts of the Stafford students and has offered to match whatever our total is for Africa Bridge.  That means that right now they would donate another $4,200 to make our total $8,400. What a wonderful surprise for our students to see how their efforts can move and inspire others to make a difference.(This money will go to build and improve schools.) Thank you so much for your support.  The kids feel and know they can make a difference in the lives of others!  What a great learning experience. Thank you so very much!

I wanted to thank our parents who went on the CREST field trip.  The weather was rainy but the trip was amazing and very interesting. The kids had a wonderful time learning about the garden and frogs.  I appreciate your help, time, and enthusiasm!  Thank you for being such  great sports and being a part of our “Frog Panel.”

Have a great week!  Julie

Africa Bridge

Let’s use our reading skills to make a difference in the lives of our friends in Tanzania!

Our class will have the opportunity to participate in a special literacy program throughout the month of April.  We call it the Read to Feed/Read to Build Reading Challenge Project. This program is designed to raise money to help support the students from our buddy schools in Tanzania. We read a great book called Beatrice’s Goat that tells the story of a little girl whose family receives the gift of a goat.  The goat helps them earn enough money to feed her family and to send Beatrice to school.  The non-profit organization, Africa Bridge, supplies this type of sustainable help in Tanzania to support needy and orphaned children through their pig and cow co-ops.

Pig Co-Op

We are very excited to join the second grade students and know that we, too, can make a difference in people’s lives by making a difference in the life of just one child.  We know that through our donations to Africa Bridge:

  • $25 pays for supplies for a child to attend primary school a year.
  • $120 pays for fees and supplies to send a child to secondary school for a year.
  • $250 pays for one family’s membership in a pig co-op.
  • $1,000 pays for one family’s membership in a potato or cow co-op.
  • $10,000 builds a classroom.

Old Classrooms

In second grade they decided to use their  reading skills to help support their friends at Pakati School.  They challenged themselves to read more and looked for sponsors for their reading.  Together with the efforts of the 3rd and 4th graders through their school-wide fundraiser, The Market Place, Stafford students have done great things over the past 3 years. Thanks to their efforts:

  • More students are attending school.
  • Families have more food as a result of the animal cooperatives.
  • 3 new classrooms have been built.
  • They could build 1 bathroom.

New classrooms built with the help of Stafford School

We will have a special assembly this week to begin our program this year.   Dr. Roger Woehl, the president of Africa Bridge and former superintendent for our school district, will talk to us about the great things that are happening for the students in Tanzania, thanks to the continuing support of the students at Stafford School.  We are excited to see what we do this year! We will be expanding our help to the Lufingo schools. They need support sending students to school, help rebuilding classrooms and building more desks. We will be looking for sponsors for our reading challenge program starting today.

Barry Childs meeting with students

More information will be coming home in an envelope with your first grader at the end of this week.
